FFA Fundus Fluorescein Digital Angiography

A vascular imaging method used to evaluate retinal artery and veins supplying the layers of optic nerve (retina) and the coroidal circulation. It is an essential technique in diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, and macular degeneration (age-related macular degeneration).

Argon Laser

A commonly used type of laser for treatment of retinal diseases. The area producing edema or the ischemic retinal site causing development of NV (neovascularization-NV) is closed by argon laser in case of detection of blood vessels formed subsequent to diabetes (NV) or microaneurysms leaking into macular area after a retinal examination. This therapy will avoid the edema or loss of vision associated with hemorrhage.

Argon laser therapy is primarily for preservation of existing vision and therefore it is important for the patient not to lose time.

Argon laser is also used in treatment of retinal detachment. Argon laser burns the area delivered and make the retinal nerve layer attached to pigment layer underneath so retina is prevented to detach from its place and no leakage occurs around the rupture.

Major intraocular (vitreous) hemorrhages may occur in advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients. This mostly occurs when Argon Laser treatment is delayed.

YAG Laser

Recurrence of a cataract is impossible after having a cataract surgery. There is a condition misstated by people, which goes “I’ve got a cataract in my eye”, in fact the ocular lens thickens the capsule and reduces the vision. In this case, no surgery is required; the capsule is opened by YAG LASER treatment in 1-2 minutes and normal vision is restored.


Retina is the only tissue where you can see the capillary vessels of entire body by a direct look. The sate of these vessels will tell the problems with circulation of capillary vessels in the entire body. A retinal examination evaluates the hypertension, vascular health, blood cholesterol level, and degrees of atherosclerosis. Only Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital has Imedos retinal vessel analyzer in Turkey, which is able to classify cardiovascular health of entire body and detect sudden risk of a disease such as stroke, angina pectoris, and heart attack. So, precautions can be taken before occurrence of the disease.

Retinal vessel analysis is performed in 2 ways. This first one is static analysis of artery, which assesses the ratio of veins. The other one is dynamic analysis of vessels, which involves taking a 6-minute video of retina. During this 6-minute, a 20-second photopsy is sent to the retina three times and retinal response to this stimulant is recorded. The resulting values are assessed and scored by the results of multicenter reference studies to have microvascular risk of the entire body.
